We are here!!! Made it to Beijing

The long journey has ended! We had uneventful but loooong flights from VPS to Atlanta to Seoul to Beijing yesterday. On the long leg from Atlanta to Seoul Jared stretched out on the floor under our row of 4 seats (so no leg room for the rest of us, while Anna stretched out to sleep across two seats (finally falling asleep after asking every 5 minutes "how many more hours?" starting after only about 5 hours into the 14-hourleg...that got old fast! Individual tv screens with lots of video and game choices meant we were all adequately entertained. We finally arrived at our hotel in Beijing at about 9pm last night (that's 9am Thursday for those of you on the east coast, 8am for our friends in the panhandle.)
Our first night was a little rough. Anna started with a cough before we left FL, and had low grade fevers on the flight. She started throwing up in the middle of the night last night, and with the jet lag, none of us slept very well after about 3am. I even had to go down to the lobby in a robe at about 1am to ask them to quiet down our neighboring room full of what sounded like drunken Chinese men playing cards.
I am happy to report, however, that now that we've had some breakfast and showers, we are all feeling refreshed and ready for some Beijing sightseeing with our CCAI tour guide and the other adoptive families in our travel group. Even Anna has perked up well, praise God! We are in the room right now (very small room--two twin beds...kids slept on the floor) where the kids are doing a little homework before we go down to meet up with the group.
My rusty Chinese is coming back, and it's fun to hear the kids trying to speak some, too! Jared is the ultimate tourist, snapping photos at every oopoortunity!
Speaking of photos, here are a few from our trip.
Only 3 more days till Lilly's gotcha' day!
More later!

I wonder how many white ladies in bathrobes have ever gone to the front desk at that hotel and asked for quiet hours in chinese?

What is that you're eating?? It seems very interesting! I'm glad you've all made it safetly. I will be praying that you all have some wonderful family time in a city I would LOVE to see sometime.

Why Adoption? Why China?

I'm sure that many of you, when you learned that Tom and I were pursuing adoption of a little girl from China, wondered "why?!" We may have taken some of you by surprise, and we thought it might be nice to share some of our thinking about this journey we are undertaking.

Adoption is something that, even from the earliest years of our marriage, we talked about as "maybe someday." The idea of adoption is appealing to us for many reasons. As Christians, we are adopted by God as his children through faith in Jesus. Adoption allows us to provide a child with the needed love, warmth, and financial resources we have been blessed with as a family. Finally, adoption allows us to add to our family at a time when our biological children are old enough to be more self-sufficient, and we are in a position financially to be able to welcome a child into our family in this way. What we hope to gain is an additional family member to love and learn from, and an opportunity to share the joy and love of our family.

We recognize that an adoption will bring unique parenting challenges to our family--especially since we are considering a child with special needs--and it is likely to put unique stresses on our family in a variety of ways. We are grateful for Tom's medical knowledge and for the great medical coverage we get through Tom's Air Force career, and we look forward to providing a forever family for a child whose medical needs might make it more difficult for another family to take on.

Finally, why China? My love for China, the Chinese language, and the Chinese people made China the natural choice. It was never really even a consideration whether to go with a domestic adoption or international; China was simply the natural choice that we immediately pursued, especially since there are so many children in China that need a forever family.
